Who Is Becky G?

California native Becky G found fame singing songs like "Shower" before moving onto Spanish-language hits such as "Sin Pijama" and "Mayores." Her music incorporates rap, pop hooks, reggaeton and Latin influences. In 2013, she signed on as a representative for the beauty line CoverGirl. Becky has guest starred on the television show Empire and was one of the leads in 2017's big-screen Power Rangers adaptation. She began her career at nine years old, following a financial setback that meant her family had to move into her grandparents' garage. All four of Becky's grandparents left Mexico to come to the United States, and she has talked about how their courage and hard work led to more opportunities for their granddaughter.

Family and Early Life

Becky G was born as Rebbeca Marie Gomez on March 2, 1997, in Inglewood, California. Becky's parents, Alex and Frank, were high school sweethearts who met at Santa Monica High School. They had Becky, her brothers Frankie and Alex, and Becky's younger sister Stephanie. Becky's grandparents emigrated from Mexico. She's part of the second generation of her family to be born in the United States.

After the family lost their home due to a ballooning mortgage payment and went to live in a small converted garage, a nine-year-old Becky decided to start a career in entertainment to bolster her family's finances. She looked for child talent agencies, found an agent and began getting work in commercials, voiceovers and modeling. Becky has attributed being part of a large extended family with giving her the attention-getting skills that helped her achieve entertainment success.

Becky has shared some details about her struggle with anxiety, crediting her family's support with helping her cope with this issue.

Music Career

Becky was writing her own music at age 11 and learned to play the guitar at 13. Her cover of Kanye West and Jay Z’s "Otis," one of several cover videos she posted on YouTube, caught the eye of producer Dr. Luke. In 2011, she signed with his Kemosabe/RCA Records. Her EP, Play It Again, came out in 2013.

Some of the artists Becky has collaborated with include and Pitbull (their "Can’t Get Enough" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Latin Rhythmic Airplay chart); she has writing credits on Cody Simpson's "Wish You Were Here" and Cher Lloyd's "Oath." In addition, she's toured with singers such as Katy Perry, Demi Lovato and Fifth Harmony.

Becky has cited Jennifer Lopez and the late star Selena Quintanilla as personal inspirations. She grew up listening to a range of music that included rock classics, 1990s hits and traditional Mexican music.

Notable Songs

In 2013, Becky's debut single "Becky From the Block" came out. The song not only referenced Lopez's "Jenny From the Block" (2002), but Lopez herself made a cameo appearance in the video.

The summer of 2014 saw Becky's "Shower" become a hit. The song charted in the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Spanish-Language Music

Becky initially found success singing in English but began to feel disconnected from tunes that had been written by and for others. By making Spanish-language music, she regained inspiration while staying true to herself. Her Spanish singles include "Sola," "Todo Cambio," "Sin Pijama" (with Natti Natasha) and "Mayores."

The video for "Mayores" — a catchy song that features Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny — has more than one billion views on YouTube. Becky has said that videos for her Spanish-language songs should help the music reach English-speaking audiences, as they'll be able to grasp meaning via these "mini movies."

Becky has admitted her Spanish wasn't perfect when she started creating Spanish-language music. However, she was still proud and happy to get in touch with her heritage.

Movies and Television

In 2015, Becky guest starred as Valentina on the TV show Empire. She made her big-screen debut as Trini, the Yellow Ranger, in 2017's film version of the 1990s TV show Power Rangers. Trini has been called the first LGBT protagonist to appear in a big-budget superhero movie, though the character's sexuality was only addressed in a brief bit of dialogue.

Becky also voiced a character in Gnome Alone (2017) and starred in the family adventure film A.X.L. (2018).

In December 2017, Becky made a statement on social media about her half-sister, who had just turned 18. She had known about this sister since she was 13, but the two had limited contact. After sharing her hopes that their relationship could further develop, Becky wrote, "I want you to know that I wish you all the best in life and that you find happiness wherever your heart takes you."

Political Views

After Donald Trump started his presidential campaign in 2015 by disparaging Mexicans, Becky dedicated "We Are Mexico" to Trump. The song talked about immigrants' family values, hard work and other positive traits.

Becky has encouraged people, particularly her demographic cohorts, to vote. She's also voiced support for DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, the program that provided educational and job opportunities to people who lacked legal status but had lived in the United States since they were children.

Personal Life

In 2016, Becky began dating soccer player Sebastian Lletget. The two were introduced by Naomi Scott, a Power Rangers co-star. Prior to this relationship, Becky was involved with singer Austin Mahone.
