What better time to enjoy a warm bowl of soup than in cold weather? That's why January was chosen to celebrate National Soup Month.

January is National Soup Month. In early times soup was called "pottage" (from pot and the Latin potare, to drink), but by the Middle Ages, the word "soup" had replaced "pottage" in most European languages. The word soup is thought to have come from the sound made by slurping hot liquid from a spoon.

The earliest archaeological evidence for the consumption of soup dates back to 6000 BC, and it was hippopotamus soup. Soups are classified into two groups: clear soups and thick soups. Soups can be consumed hot or cold, depending on the climate of the region where it's being served, and flavors can be sweet or savory.

February 4th heats up with National Homemade Soup Day. In every cuisine, soup provides a rich basis of flavor and history.

Soup is normally associated with fall and winter but there are many soups that are delicious during the summer months (not just gazpacho) and comforting.

Who boiled the first soup? The exact time period that soup was invented remains debatable. However according to archaeologist John Speth, our ancient Neanderthal relatives were likely to have begun boiling meat to render fat from animal bones – resulting in a meat broth that they would have drunk as soup.
