Today, I have put together this chocolate chip cookie mix in a mason jar. These jars make great favors for weddings, baby showers,

bridal showers, holidays, birthday parties and more! The jar will include perfectly portioned dry ingredients. All your recipient needs to do is add the wet ingredients (butter, eggs and vanilla extract) and bake! The instructions below are to create chocolate chip cookie mix.

Typically when I see these types of cookie mix in a jar recipes, they call for quart size mason jars. While these can be great for single gifts, I thought they were pretty large for handing out as favors to a larger group of guests at a shower or wedding.

I set out to find the perfect cookie recipe that would fit a pint size jar, and after some trial and error (and a lot of taste testing!) I finally came up with a recipe that perfectly fits a pint size jar and creates the tastiest, soft baked chocolate chip cookies. Here’s how to put these jars together.

The idea for this chocolate chip cookie mix in a jar came from my need to figure out Christmas gifts to give to my husband’s cousins. We all don’t normally exchange gifts but generally give each other a little something small.

One year I made these cute little build your own s’mores kits and those were a big hit! I wanted to figure out something else that was similar that I could create myself and also wouldn’t go to waste.

I feel like sometimes small gifts, think things you typically receive as wedding favors can end up not being used and getting thrown out. That is why editable (or drinkable – is that a word?!) gifts are always my favorite! And who doesn’t love chocolate chip cookies? Especially around Christmastime.

So I bought a whole bunch of mason jars, filled them up with ingredients and added the printable recipe tags that I had created. I had 15 jars sitting on my dining room table, all ready to go.

And what do you think happened next? Plans changed, we didn’t ended up meeting up with my husband’s cousins until many months later. Of course! All my hard work planning the perfect gift went to waste.

Think again. What is there to do with tons of mason jars filled with chocolate chip cookie ingredients? Make tons of chocolate chip cookies and eat them all yourself!

Okay so I didn’t eat them all by myself. My husband definitely wasn’t one to complain about the amount of fresh chocolate chip cookies that were always in the house.

It had actually gotten to a point where if I didn’t have a new batch ready by the time he got home from work he thought something was wrong!

In any case, we can both vouch for the fact that these are super tasty chocolate chip cookies that are so easy to make. I would highly recommend trying these out for holiday gifts this year, especially if you have a lot of people on your list.

They are also great to keep on hand for when you weren’t expecting a gift from someone. During the holiday season I make sure to keep some generic presents on hand so that if someone unexpectedly gives me a gift, I don’t have to send them home empty handed.

Now let’s get to how to make these jars!

How long does cookie mix in a jar last?

If the ingredients you used to assemble your jars were fresh, meaning they weren’t set to expire any time soon, and your jar is sealed tightly, they should last for up to 6 months. But with chocolate chip cookies that taste this good, I don’t expect that you’ll wait that long to make them!

What size mason jar should you use?

For this particular recipe, you will need to use a pint size glass jar. I have seen a ton of quart size cookie mix instructions floating around the internet. While these are great for one off gifts, I wanted to create a recipe for a pint size jar, which is a bit smaller than the quart so that they would be better suited for making multiples.

Whether you need a favor for a holiday party, or want to make a bunch to give out as gifts to a large group of friends, family members, co-workers etc, these pint size jars would in my opinion, be a better size.

How many cookies will this recipe make?

This recipe will make about 8-10 delicious chocolate chip cookies!

Directions:

  1. First, I’d recommend washing out your mason jar with soap and water. Just make sure to dry the inside really well, or the ingredients will stick to the edges.
  2. Next, combine 3/4 cup flour, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda and 1/4 teaspoon salt in a mixing bowl and set aside.
  3. Pour flour/baking soda/salt mixture into your pint size glass jar. Gently pat the bottom of the jar with your hand to make sure the flour mixture is level.
  4. Add 1/2 cup chocolate chips to the jar on top of the flour mixture.
  5. Then add 1/4 cup packed brown sugar as the next layer.
  6. Finally, measure out 1/3 cup granulated sugar and add to the top.

Note: This next part is completely optional, if you want to keep the metal mason jar lid as is, feel free to skip this step!

Cut a square piece of your decorative paperthat is a little bit larger than the mason jar lid. I taped down the paper just to hold it in place. Cut off the excess paper so your inner lid looks like the below. It doesn’t have to be perfect since the outer part of the lid will be covering the edges.

Next, screw back on the jar lid tightly. Finally, tie ribbon, string or twine around the top of the jar Make sure to leave a bit extra hanging down to tie on the recipe tag.

The tags are designed to print on an 8.5×11 inch page. For the best quality I would definitely recommend printing on white cardstock. Or, for a more rustic look, kraft paper would look great as well.

8 tags will print per page and measure approximately 2×3 inches when trimmed. You can either use scissors to cut the tags out, or a paper cutter if you’d like to make sure all edges are perfectly straight. I’m currently using this paper cutter and can definitely recommend it!

After the tags are cut out, you can use a hole punch up at the top to punch a hole and then tie onto your mason jar with ribbon, string or twine.

If you’d like you can even write a short note or greeting on the back of the tag. This can make a DIY gift even more personalized.
