One of Aunt Lou’s favorite recipes is her Crock Pot Sausage, Green Beans and Potatoes. It is simple and delicious AND according to this week’s meal plan, we were supposed to have it for dinner on Monday.
Confession… we did not.
You see, when I was shopping for this recipe I saw a nice head of cabbage and decided to add it to the dish… but when I went to put it together I decided to leave out the green beans and created a totally different dish AND we just loved it.
It is everything a great slow cooker recipe should be… Easy to throw together, cooks all day and issimply delicious!

I used carrots, an onion, half large cabbage and one package of turkey smoked sausage. I also increased my water to 6 cups. Added tumeric, celery seed and S & P. Came out freaking wonderful!!!! Thanks!Reply

Sounds delicious! So glad you enjoyed it!

This is now one of my favorite recipes. SOOOOO delicious! I added a yellow onion and 2 cups of water to the recipe. My crock pot was extremely full of food so I felt that 4 cups of broth wasn’t enough. I added salt and pepper at the end, and it turned out perfectly.Reply

So happy to hear you enjoyed it and made it your own! Thank you for taking the time to let us know. We love hearing from our readers!

I wondered if you would advise freezing the leftovers. It’s makes so much and it’s just my husband and I. Love the recipe but don’t want to eat it for a week! Thanks!

I’m not sure this recipe would freeze well. The potatoes and cabbage might not hold up if frozen and reheated. If you give it a try, let me know how it turns out.JoAnn says
Maybe try halving the recipe. I just cook for myself and sometimes some of my family when they stop by. However, I find that if I halve the recipe, it’s enough for me to have dinner and take some for my lunch the next day with just a little left over. Hope this helps.

Made this today and it was a hit! I added onions and chicken stock instead of broth. The meal was so-o-o good! Served it with a crusty bread to soak up the broth. I love crock pot recipes!Reply

Loved the easy recipe! I didn’t pay attention & put on high first 2 hours, then turned it down. I only had canned sliced potatoes & I wish I hadn’t added them, but that was my problem, not the recipes! Thanks!!Reply

Adding to my comment above, I also used Apple-Chicken sausages, since I had those. Looking forward to trying. Didn’t add any spices & I know it’s gonna need some salt & pepper! Thanks again.Cris says
So glad you enjoyed it, Jana! You might also enjoy some of our other cabbage and smoked sausage recipes too. Thanks so much for taking the time to let us know you enjoyed this one!!

To make sure my cabbage doesn’t get soggy how long do you prefer I cook it for? Do I have to use 4 cups of broth?
Reply
Cris says
Hi Christine-
I am not sure about the texture you are trying to achieve. We typically cook until our cabbage is very tender. You can get a firmer texture by reducing cooking time but I haven’t tried it to make sure the potatoes get done as well.

How much sausage is 1 1/2 packages exactly? A weighted amount please.

Cris says
I believe most kielbasa/smoked sausage comes in 13-14 oz packages. Enjoy!
Kay says
Dosen’t the cabbage get doggy after being cooked 7 hours? Would love to make this for church potluck…
Reply
Cris says
Hi Kay-We enjoy the texture of cooked cabbage, however if you prefer a firmer result you can always add it later in the cooking process. Enjoy!
Chris says
Would you recommend a sweet barbecue sauce to slow cook it with?
Cris says
Hi Chris-I really like Sweet Baby Ray’s but that is just my personal preference. Hope that helps!
Glo says
Love this! Not only do I add onions, but red, yellow, and green peppers too! I also use less chicken broth.Reply
anita says
I used the recipe as a start for something else. I used cabbage, Hot Italian sausages, and potatoes, but I also added tomato sauce and lemon juice and a little brown splenda. So tasty.Reply
John says
Where are the onions? You have to have onions with tators and cabbage.

Cris says
Hi John!
I think onions would be fabulous in this! You are so right!
Dottie Hashizumi says
If I can’t get baby red potatoes, which would you suggest ? Yukon or Idaho ?
ThanksReply
Cris says
Hi Dottie! If you prefer to leave the skins on, the golds chopped up should do fine. Otherwise, I’d peel and chop the Idahos. Enjoy!
Sharon from Tennessee says
Sounds like a solid YUM for me. Now to talk Hubby into having cabbage…*sigh*

Cris says
Hi Sharon-If he isn’t a cabbage fan, you might try the green bean version instead: http://www.recipesthatcrock.com/crock-pot-sausage-green-beans-and-potatoes/
Enjoy!
Cris says
Hi Diane-
You can definitely use it as a substitute. Enjoy!Reply
Ron says
I used Cajun Kielbasa, nice and spicy.
Diane Knoedler says
Ok, Is smoked sausage the same as kilbasa sausage??
Reply
Julie Wetzel says
No. Smoked sausage is much spicier.
Kielbasa is kind of blah.Gary Lipking says
Try Dickie’s Polish Sausage. It’s the best. I buy it at Wal-Mart Grocery Store…. Regular is better than Spicy. In my opinion….
