Ingredients Information and Substitutions

  • Cream Cheese - For best results, use softened cream cheese- you can leave it out for an hour before mixing this together or you can zap it in the microwave for 30 seconds. This allows it to blend smoother and give you the best texture.
  • Sour Cream - I prefer full fat because it makes the dip extra creamy, but you can I've also made a lower fat version and it was still super tasty.
  • Onion - Mince it fairly fine, and it will be perfect! Tip: If you don't love a strong raw onion flavor, soak the minced onion in cold water for 10 minutes before draining really well for a more mellow onion flavor.
  • Seasonings - I use a combination of celery salt and garlic powder to give the shrimp cream cheese dip lots of flavor.
  • Hot sauce - The dip needs a hint of heat, and Frank's Red Hot is my favorite. You can also use any hot sauce you like.
  • Mayonnaise - Stick with real mayo for the best results.
  • Shrimp - You can use frozen shrimp that has been thawed and is pre-cooked. This will save time and tastes great!

Tips for making Grandma's Shrimp Dip Recipe

  • Use precooked shrimp! Make your life easier and buy your shrimp precooked and peeled. That way you won't have the hassle of having to cook and chill the shrimp — you can just chop them up and throw this dip together in record time!
  • Don't forget to garnish. Grandma often left a few pieces of shrimp whole to garnish the top of the dip, and once in a while, she would hide a couple of pieces of whole shrimp inside the dips as well. It was always a sweet jackpot moment for whoever happened to scoop that up! Another option would be to hold a small amount of chopped shrimp and sprinkle that on top just before serving.
  • Be sure to taste test. The key to getting the perfect shrimp cream cheese dip is to taste it and adjust the seasonings to your taste. This is important with any savory recipe, but especially this one.
  • Don't skip chilling! This really helps bring the flavors together.
  • Prep ahead- You can prep the whole dip the day before or just chop the onion and the shrimp ahead.
  • Leftovers and storage- This will last a couple days covered in your refrigerator.

I want to make this recipe but I don’t eat raw onions. How much onion powder would you substitute? I can’t tell you how hard it has been growing up and living in the deep south and not eating onions!

Hi Holly! No problem, you can totally use onion powder. Start with 1/2 teaspoon and taste it. Add more if needed. The other option would be to soak the onions in cold water for 10 minutes and dry well before adding. That will tone down the super harsh onion flavor that tends to come with raw onions. Enjoy!

Made this for a party and it was a hit! I did add some Lawry's seasoning salt to it though.
